Chocolate is Poison for a Dog

Chocolate can be like poison for a dog. A stimulant named THEOBROMINE , similar to caffeine, can cause eventual heart and nervous system injury or organ dysfunction. If your dog weighs 1 pound then only 1 ounce of chocolate would be toxic. SEMI SWEET is much stronger and can cause injury per ounce per 3-6 pounds, roughly double the toxicity of milk chocolate. BAKERS CHOCOLATE is toxic for 1 ounce per 10 pound dog. Stronger yet is the COCOA BEAN being toxic at a ration of only 1 ounce per 33 pounds of body wieght in a dog. NEVER FORGET, chocolate is not a good thing for your dog.

I met a victim the other day that is still alive.  A yellow lab named Milo had a diagnosis of Pancreatitis. The dogs human parent told me the story of her dog having eaten an entire pound of chocolate. The only clue to the chocolate having been eaten was the empty wrapper under the table, found in not enough time to prevent organ damage do to the high levels of toxicity to the body. There were no symptoms until nearly 24 hours later. Vomiting and diarrhea would be the most common symptoms. All they knew to do then was GO TO THE VET. With no nitial symtoms to be alarmed by it was of no special concern at the time that it was the weekend. They should have done two things immediately. By simply ingesting the two following ingredients a dogs organ could have been rescued.

In general, if you suspect your dog may have eaten something “BAD”, with the exception of caustic substances such as Bleach or Draino , you may always induce vomiting. Your primary medicine cabinet remedies for poison control are as follows:

HYDROGEN PEROXIDE given 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight, squirted down the throat with a syringe, or soaked into a piece of bread and fed, will induce vomiting, in most cases, within 20 minutes. If there is no vomit occuring the first time, repeat the process and try again, but only once more. go to the vet imediately if your dog does not vomit after trying twice to induce vominting this way. Most often vomiting will resolve many near dangerous situations. A dogs digestive track is much shorter than a humans and is easily vacated if vomiting is induced soon enough. vomiting must be induced within 2 hours of ingestion as the digestive track in dogs moves so fast that anything longer than that will not give a result of vomit. Don’t hesitate to look closely at the vomit for ingredients! See what you see. Look closely to see if you see what you thought you would see? Garbage? Plants?

FOLLOW Hydrogen Peroxide with ACTIVATED CHARCOAL CAPS. An indepth search on my part has never located a specific dose for activated charcoal, but it is harmless and can only benefit the digestive system. A dose of 2 tabs is indicated for humans and seems to work just fine on my dogs. Be reminded of how your water filter works. Charcoal is the all absorbing ingredient that filters bad ingredients out of our drinking water. If you introduce charcoal into the digestive system it will absorb toxins very well removing harmful side effects of toxic foods. Don’t hesitate to give your dog CHARCOLA TABS whenever there is even the slightest chance of indigestion or toxicity. Effective results are most often the case.

So in summary, when in doubt about what your dog ate, or if you are sure it was chocolate, INDUCE VOMITING and FOLLOW with ACTIVATED CHARCOAL tabs.

Remember if you do not successfully see your dog vomit then GO TO THE VET. Always go to the vet when in doubt.
